Once you are shown the proper way to deliver techniques, you need the speed, power and stamina to make them work. Of the three necessities, stamina is usually the most difficult to achieve. Many people have enough speed and power to deliver effective strikes but cannot maintain the level of energy to thwart an attack. If you tire quickly and cannot sustain your movements to react at top speed, you will lose no matter how well you fight. The Group Class stretches your muscles. The more flexible your muscles, the less energy needed to throw the techniques. To get the whip action required in kicks and punches, you need to have relaxed muscles. Throwing any technique is just the opposite of weightlifting. If you contract your muscles, they become tight and your motions are more of a push than a strike. Power comes from moving your weight tremendously fast, again placing emphasis on stretching. We also do physical exercise in the class. Focus pads, heavy kicking bags and target pads are some of the tools used to build your muscles. The stronger your muscles are, the more a strike is absorbed by your opponent. You not only want your strikes to hit the outside of an opponent, but to penetrate the body to affect the nerves, arteries and vital organs. |
